2nd suspect arrested in connection to Birmingham homicide

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Birmingham Police Department announced a second arrest in connection to an ongoing homicide investigation.

Michael Spellman, 62, of Birmingham was arrested Thursday as officers noticed him riding a bicycle near the intersection of Ninth Avenue West and First Street West. He was previously identified as a person of interest in the kidnapping and killing of Genise Carter on Jan. 25.

Spellman was transported to BPD Headquarters for questioning and then booked into the Birmingham City Jail under a 48-hour felony extension.

On Friday, detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and obtained a warrant for capital murder (kidnapping) on Spellman. He’s in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail under no bond.
