Local UAB School of Nursing Team Wins Prestigious National Article of the Year Award

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing (UABSON) team has won the 2024 Edgar C. Hayhow Award for their article. The American College of Healthcare Executives recognized their work, titled “Understanding the Impact of Span of Control on Nurse Managers and Hospital Outcomes,” published in the Journal of Healthcare Management. The research offers insights into nurse manager workloads and practical suggestions for healthcare executives.

The author team includes PhD student Asiah Ruffin, Dean Maria R. Shirey, Professor Patricia A. Patrician, Associate Professor Pariya Wheeler, and Assistant Professor Tracey Dick. Ruffin expressed her gratitude for the recognition, attributing it to her passion for studying nurse leaders and the quality of mentorship at UABSON.

Ruffin believes the article is a key step in creating knowledge to support and advance nursing leadership in healthcare systems. She also expressed appreciation for the chance to work with a distinguished team, which she says has helped her grow as a leader and contribute to nursing science.
