Black History Month is celebrated every February, and this year’s theme is ‘African Americans and the Arts’. The Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is interviewing faculty, staff, and students who are impacting the community. The first interview is with Tiffany Mayo, M.D., an associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at UAB.

Mayo, who is also the vice chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Dermatology at UAB, highlights the importance of Black History Month. She sees it as a time to reflect on the contributions of African Americans and the need for continued dialogue and efforts towards equality.

Mayo, as a physician, sees Black History Month as a chance to address the historical factors that contribute to racial health disparities. She emphasizes the need to improve health outcomes in minority populations and rebuild trust in these communities.

Mayo personally views Black History Month as a time to honor the bravery of known and unknown African Americans who have made significant progress despite challenges. She remembers participating in Black History Month celebrations in her elementary school and church.
