Burn patient tells her story of survival during Burn Awareness Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – In May 2018, Markelya Williams suffered from third-degree burns on her head, shoulders and arms when checking a lighter. Williams had just gotten her hair done and had oil sheen in her hair. In the 90-degree heat and humidity, she ran out to her car to grab a brush. While in her car, her cousin asked if she had a lighter. She went to check to see if the one in her car worked. Because of the heat trapped in her car and all the oil in her hair, the lighter ignited her hair. The flames moved onto her shoulders and down her arms.
