Birmingham is seeking retired teachers or those with flexible schedules to tutor 3rd grade students in reading. This is part of the city’s Page Pals: SOS initiative, aiming to ensure all 3rd graders read at grade level. The tutoring will take place in city schools from February 21 to March 22, 2024, with tutors providing at least one hour of daily in-school instruction.

Tutors will receive a $500 stipend. Eligible applicants are retired or flexible-schedule teachers, preferably with an English or Language Arts background. They must submit a cover letter, resume with contact details, and proof of their teaching background.

This initiative is part of Mayor Randall L. Woodfin’s efforts to boost 3rd grade literacy rates in Birmingham. The tutoring is scheduled ahead of the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) in April 2024.

The program aims to recruit 200 tutors for a four-week period. After this period, all tutors will receive their stipend for their contribution to improving literacy rates.
