Birmingham council helps fund new hip-hop exhibit at McWane Science Center

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A new exhibit celebrating the history of hip-hop and science will soon be on display at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, with the help of the city council.

During a city council meeting Tuesday, Birmingham City Council approved $450,000 to help bring the exhibit to life, which will include music and STEM principles. The 7,000 sq. ft. exhibit will include a DJ and MC station, teaching children the connection between beat making to math and science and the connection between turn tables to technology and engineering.

“Hip-hop music and culture in particular is very technological so we thought it was a great fit,” said Erik Lizee, vice president of exhibit facilities and planning at McWane Science Center.

Lizee said the idea for this exhibit has been in the works for the past four years. So far, the McWane Center has raised $1.1 million through fundraisers and plan to raise more money throughout the year.
