The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has initiated a new Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CEDD). The center’s goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. It combines clinical service, training, and research to assist those affected by developmental disabilities in Alabama and beyond. The CEDD aims to expand knowledge about developmental disabilities and apply this knowledge to service and education programs. The center’s objectives are determined in cooperation with self-advocates, families, and community partners.
Sarah O’Kelley, Ph.D., the CEDD director, highlighted the significance of partnerships with key stakeholders in Alabama. The CEDD supports over 30 clinics and various projects, training, and research programs at UAB. Faculty, staff, and trainees from 12 disciplines are supported by the UAB Civitan-Sparks Clinics.
The center aims to increase the number of trained professionals and self-advocates in Alabama. It also seeks to raise awareness about developmental disabilities. This is anticipated to improve access to resources for families and individuals, enhancing their quality of life.
