‘Senseless violence’: Police chief responds after 6 killed in Birmingham shootings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond has issued a statement after multiple shootings in the city left six people dead Friday.

Four people were killed in what police described as a targeted attack on Center Street North, and, hours later, two people were discovered shot to death in Wylam. The shootings are not thought to be related.

“Today, the City of Birmingham experienced an unfathomable amount of senseless
violence. As a result, five men and one woman lost their lives,” wrote Thurmond.

The identities of the four people killed in the Center Street North have not yet been released to the public.

Today, the City of Birmingham experienced an unfathomable amount of senseless
violence. As a result, five men and one woman lost their lives. One of those males was
a City of Birmingham employee who just completed his shift for the day. All lost their
lives because of gun violence.

Our city has been rocked to its core by today’s events. Our city and communities are
hurting beyond belief.

Our citizens and the City of Birmingham deserve better. The Birmingham Police
Department will work tirelessly to solve these murders as well as many others that
remain unsolved.
