Mississippi College offers new home for students at soon-to-close college

CLINTON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – As a storied institution in Alabama is set to close this year, a local University is offering to be a home for those wanting to continue their college degree.

Birmingham Southern College (BSC) announced to students, faculty, staff and alumni this week that the university would close on May 31. For students not set to graduate this spring, they will have to finish their education somewhere else. Recognizing the academic limbo hundreds of BSC students now face, colleges and universities inside and outside of Alabama are offering to be a new home for hundreds of students.

Mississippi College (MC), roughly 250 miles west of Birmingham, is making that offer to BSC Panthers. MC President Blake Thompson extended an invitation to qualified students to apply for a $13,500 transfer scholarship for each eligible year of study to attend MC.

“Similar institutions whose primary purpose is to serve students feel the weight of your circumstances, and we want to help,” Thompson wrote. “On behalf of the Mississippi College family, I invite you to consider MC, and I encourage you to visit our campus in Clinton.”
