Social media reacts to Fox’s 1954 black-and-white broadcast at Rickwood Field between Giants, Cardinals

Fox is pulling out all the nostalgic stops for the game from Birmingham, Alabama’s Rickwood Field to honor the Negro Leagues.

The broadcast switched to an old-school format in the middle of the broadcast, a throwback to 1954 look at how games were broadcast. The top of the fifth inning was shown in black-and-white, with everything resembling what a game looked like 70 years ago.

Some of the highlights included the Cardinals turning a double play, the split-screen showing runners on, and old-school scorebug. The audio even included the audio tinny that could be heard from announcers in the era.

Rickwood Field, which opened on August 18, 1910, is the oldest park in the United States and one of five Negro League Parks still standing in 2024. The field is older than the oldest MLB parks in Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. The Black Barons played at Rickwood Field until 1960.
