Inmate dies while in custody at Shelby County Jail

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Authorities are investigating after a Shelby County inmate died early Tuesday morning.

According to Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Carly Smith, 38, of Birmingham was arrested on Aug. 8 on felony obstruction of justice using a false identity charge. She was arrested, taken into custody at the Shelby County Jail and assessed by medical staff.

During a safety check at around 1:55 a.m., Smith was found in medical distress. Authorities began life-saving efforts, but she was pronounced dead around 2:26 a.m.

St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an outside review of the incident. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
