Samford soccer, No. 15 Notre Dame to meet in Homewood

HOMEWOOD, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The No. 15 women’s soccer team in the U.S. is coming to Homewood on Sunday evening.

Samford will face off against No. 15 Notre Dame in Shauna Yelton Field at 6 p.m. Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.

The Bulldogs kicked off their season Thursday with a 3-1 triumph over Tennessee Tech. Defender Anna Major, forward Layton Glisson and midfielder Fleming Dean scored for Samford in what was also the Bulldogs’ home opener.

The Fighting Irish dropped its opening contest, 2-1, to Michigan State on Thursday. Notre Dame finished its 2023 slate with a 12-4-4 overall record and went 7-1-2 in ACC play. Two of its top five scorers from last season returned.

Four starters and 20 letterwinners from the 2023 Samford team are back for the 2024 season. Bulldog head coach Todd Yelton is in his 23rd season leading the program and has compiled a 277-112-61 record at the university. Under his tenure, Samford has reached seven NCAA tournaments, with the most recent appearance coming in 2022.
