FROM STAFF REPORTS

Consistent school attendance is a key factor in a student’s academic success. However, the rise in chronic absenteeism since the pandemic has posed significant challenges for schools nationwide. In response, Alabama’s educators, communities and advocates are joining forces to ensure students are in school and on track for success.

The Alabama State Department of Education and the University of Montevallo will host an Absenteeism and Truancy Summit at the Grandview Marriott on Highway 280 in Birmingham Sept. 4-5. This event will bring together educators and experts to share innovative strategies and proven practices that boost student attendance and achievement.

The summit will feature keynote speaker Hedy Chang, the founder and executive director of Attendance Works, a national organization dedicated to reducing chronic absence and promoting educational equity. Her insights will spotlight effective approaches to keeping students engaged and in the classroom. Chang will speak on Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 9:15-10:45 a.m.
