Rev. Greason’s 100th birthday celebration to be hosted at Rickwood Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Veterans and active duty military will join forces with athletic and spiritual communities to celebrate the Rev. William Greason on his 100th birthday Tuesday evening.

Unsettled pattern late week with cooler temperatures

The celebration will showcase Greason’s life of service, faith and patriotism. Greason was one of the first Black men to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a star pitcher for the Birmingham Black Barons, a mentor and friend to Willie Mays and is the oldest living player from the Negro Leagues.

There will be several spokespeople at the event. The celebration is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rickwood Field and will be hosted by Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health.
