TARRANT, Ala. ( WIAT ) — CBS 42’s Your Voice Your Station team has been following Randy Weaver’s journey for nearly three years as he’s worked to get a storm shelter for the City of Tarrant.

The Jefferson County Commission has now taken the steps needed to approve spending almost $100,000 more to build one in the community .

This comes after the contractor stopped building the shelter at the rec center when it found a swimming pool underneath the parking lot.

District 4 Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight said it’s important for there to be a solid foundation at the site.

“The site that was chosen – we didn’t select the site that was from the officials there, but they discovered there previously had been a swimming pool under there – so they would have to make the adjustment to go in and fill in or whatever they need to do just to make sure that you’re not building something on something that’s going to collapse or be a problem later on,” Knight said.
