Hurricane Milton evacuees seek shelter at RV and state parks throughout Alabama

HOOVER, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Residents are evacuating as Florida’s Tampa Bay area braces for the impact of Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make landfall Wednesday.

This latest severe weather watch comes not even two weeks after the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. Many RV parks and campgrounds in Alabama are open and taking reservations from evacuees.

When Hurricane Debby hit in August, Tom Sehlhorst says his home outside of Sarasota was flooded with water going up to his knees.

“I was watching the Gulf of Mexico come to my door, and we only got that much water in the house,” he said.

Sehlhorst says just two days ago he ripped out the ruined carpet and patched the walls in his house, only for Milton to come barreling down the tracks.

“This one’s bigger so it’s going to take the rest of the house out,” he said.

Sehlhorst bought his retirement home in Nokomis, Florida about seven years ago. He fixed it up and enjoyed living 300 feet from the water.
