BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) – Growing drought concerns across Alabama are impacting water levels in the Birmingham area. According to the Birmingham Water Works Board, Lake Purdy is down to its lowest level since January at 56 percent of full pool. It hasn’t been at full pool since mid August. Lake Purdy is owned by the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) and is used as a source of drinking water for the utility’s customers. Lake Purdy’s lowest level in data provided by the BWWB dates back to November of 2016 when levels dropped to only 26 percent of full pool. At that time, all of Alabama was in a severe drought, with most of the region in exceptional drought, the worst category for drought monitoring purposes.
