Swatting call being investigated in Jefferson County

SUMITON, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Sumiton Police Department is investigating a swatting call that occurred Tuesday afternoon.

According to public information officer Henry Irby with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, its SWAT team and other specialized units responded to the 100 block of Glen Brook Road around 1:08 p.m. to help Sumiton police with a possible shooting and hostage situation. It was reported to law enforcement that a woman was dead, a juvenile female was injured, and a male juvenile was hiding in a home requesting help.

Irby stated an investigation revealed a swatting call had occurred. The home law enforcement responded to was vacant. Besides the JCSO and Sumiton police, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, U.S. Marshals Service plus other law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services arrived at the scene.

Irby noted while law enforcement agencies are relieved that no one was hurt or killed in the case, he stated citizens must recognize swatting is dangerous and could lead to deadly results. Resources were pulled from areas where they could have been needed.
