BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A.C. Roper, former longtime police chief for the city of Birmingham, spoke to WBRC 6 News following the announcement the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) planned to revoke Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith’s certification.
The APOSTC‘s decision follows the recent indictment of Smith and Walker County Chief Deputy Ralph Williams who are accused of knowingly employing a deputy who was not certified to serve as a law enforcement officer.
The Alabama law states that because sheriffs are elected officials, they are not required to be certified by the APOSTC. However, deputy sheriffs and other law enforcement officers in Alabama are required to be certified by the APOSTC…
