SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Shelby County has introduced a “mental health liaison” to assist police officers during mental health crises, a move that has been heavily utilized by local law enforcement since its inception less than a year ago.
Zach Andrews, who holds the position, explained, “When law enforcement get in a position where they are unable to resolve an issue and they still believe this person is a danger to themselves or others, that’s when I respond to the scene to do that assessment to see if I can either help this individual or if he or she needs to be in the hospital.”…
