Organizers set to protest against detainment of Alabama counselor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham Indivisible and Alabama 5051 are organizing a protest against the deportation of Giovanna Hernandez-Martinez, an Alabama counselor detained on August 5 after being found undocumented during a traffic violation.

Faith leaders, immigrant advocates, and community members are expected to gather outside the Church of the Highlands on Grants Mill Road to protest Hernandez-Martinez’s detainment. Hernandez-Martinez, a respected social worker and immigrant advocate, has earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work. She has dedicated her career to helping immigrants pursue higher education and skilled trades training, work that benefits the entire Alabama community.

“Arresting people like Giovanna does not promote justice, it undermines it,” said organizers from Alabama 5051 and Birmingham Indivisible. “America’s priority should be fixing its broken immigration system, not punishing the very people who strengthen our communities.”…
