CALERA, Ala. — Calera Police Chief Hyche responded to criticism regarding recent arrests involving individuals in the country illegally.
“In February of this year, we arrested a man who had been caught at the border entering the country illegally late in 2024,” said Hyche. The man failed to appear for his hearing and was later arrested in Calera after attempting to enter a home through a window. He was charged with attempted burglary and public intoxication, and was found with stolen mail, leading to federal charges for mail theft and illegal presence in the U.S.
Hyche also detailed another February arrest during a routine traffic stop, which uncovered 21 kilos of cocaine. Two Colombian citizens, in the U.S. illegally, were arrested. One had a prior arrest in Atlanta in 2024 for drug trafficking but failed to appear in court after being released on bond…
