‘It’s a very direct impact’: Chargeback fraud hits local family-owned butcher shop

ALABASTER, Ala. (WBMA) — KD’s Fine Meats, a family-owned butcher shop in Alabaster, recently fell victim to chargeback fraud that cost them over $500. The shop, which reopened in June, received its largest order to date from a person claiming to represent a construction company needing meat for a Fourth of July event.

Katelin Molan, co-owner of KD’s Fine Meats, said, “We had a person that claimed they were part of a construction company and that they needed to place an order for the Fourth of July for his business. He gave us his credit card. It processed. Big corporate events are not odd for us.”

The staff prepared the order, and when the customer couldn’t pick it up by closing time, KD’s made an exception and opened on a day off. Molan explained, “Long story short. They picked up the product. Everything was good and then a few days later, we got a charge back on our account because the card had been stolen.”…
