Proposed license plate coming to Alabama in 2025—here’s what to know

If you’re due for a tag renewal soon or just like to keep up with what’s rolling onto Alabama’s roads, there are new license plates and design updates, according to a memo from the Alabama Department of Revenue.

New license plates are hitting Birmingham streets

Starting August 1, drivers can choose from a couple of brand-new specialty tags:

  • PTSD Awareness
  • Saraland City Schools

These plates join the long list of specialty tags that raise awareness and support local organizations. A shipment of prenumbered tags is already in motion, based on pre-commitments in each county.

Also rolling out August 1: updated designs for these existing tags:

  • Louisiana State University
  • Wallace State Community College

In addition, several popular plates are keeping their designs but will now be issued without a decal pocket. These include:

  • AG Tag
  • Save the Cahaba
  • Prostate Cancer Research
  • Realtor
  • Freshwater Fishing
  • Sons of Confederate Veterans

One to watch: Alabama’s first wildlife rescue tag

A proposed specialty plate from the Alabama Wildlife Center—called “Protect Wildlife”—is aiming to become the state’s first tag supporting injured and orphaned animals. If 1,000 people pre-register by May 1, 2026, the tag goes into production. Each plate generates $41.25 to help fund rescue, rehab and conservation efforts across Alabama…
