Crime down 23% in Jefferson County, but some violent crimes rise

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has released updated crime statistics, revealing a 23% decrease in overall crime since January. Sheriff Mark Pettway attributed the decline to collaborative efforts with local law enforcement agencies.

“We work together collaboratively with other agencies right here in Jefferson County to make sure that we come together, have a plan—a strategic plan—on going out to tackle crimes that’s been affecting Jefferson County,” said Pettway.

The report highlighted significant reductions in thefts, down 22%, robberies, down 44%, and homicides, down 7%, with only 13 reported cases. However, Pettway clarified that these figures do not include Birmingham, focusing instead on unincorporated areas and municipalities where the sheriff’s office leads investigations.

“We’re not counting Birmingham numbers we’re counting cities in which we are there for public safety as well as unincorporated Jefferson County so those are the cases that we are working,” Pettway explained…
