Nice Sunday, storms for some on Labor Day

Tonight: Clear skies and comfortable with lows in the low to middle 60s.

Sunday: Our skies will be filled with a bit more cloud cover through the day, but most of us will stay dry as lower humidity prevents little rain coverage in the afternoon. A couple of light rain showers will pop up for some, but this is nothing to cancel plans over. Highs will be in the middle to upper 80s.

Labor Day: A few afternoon showers and storms are expected, mainly along the I-22 corridor so areas northwest of Birmingham stand the greatest chance for some afternoon rain. These storms will be slow-moving and attempting to run east into some drier area that should keep much of eastern Alabama dry. Highs will reach the lower to middle 80s, warmest east of I-65.

Next Week: After we close out the holiday weekend, the weather pattern remains fairly similar in terms of temperatures and rain chances through Wednesday. Both Tuesday and Wednesday have a 40% chance for afternoon showers and storms with highs in the middle 80s. By Wednesday, we’ll start to feel an uptick in humidity, but this won’t become tropical-like air so overall just a more sticky feeling as highs continue to remain below average.

A cold front will sweep through here during the second half of the week, lowering our overnight lows back into the upper 50s to low 60s by Friday through Sunday mornings. Afternoon highs will fall just a couple degrees into the lower 80s for most places with comfortable humidity. This drier air will lead to multiple sunny days starting Thursday and lasting through next weekend.

Our extended forecast takes us into the second week of September and this is when it appears we may heat things back up a bit with highs approaching 90° and potentially feeling more muggy, but an overall drier pattern should stick with us until the middle of next week.

Tracking the Tropics: We are watching an area just off the west coast of Africa that has a 30% chance of development over the next week.
