BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Presidential Medal of Freedom that former President Barack Obama bestowed on baseball legend Willie Mays is one of many personal effects of the Alabama native that will be going up for auction.
On Sept. 27, Hunt Auctions will hold an auction at the King Street Warehouse near Oracle Park in San Francisco, while an online-only offering will take place the following day.
Part of the auction includes the Presidential Medal of Freedom that Mays received in 2015. Mays, originally from Westfield, Alabama, died in June 2024. According to the auction house, the medal alone is estimated to go for between $50,000 and $100,000…
