62nd commemoration of 1963 church bombing to be held in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 62nd Commemoration Service of the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing is set to take place on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at the historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.

The observance marks 62 years since the racially motivated bombing killed four girls and injured many others, a pivotal moment in American civil rights history.

The service will feature a reflection by former Alabama Attorney General Bill Baxley, who reopened and successfully prosecuted the case against one of the bombers. Musical tributes will be performed by the Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir. At 10:22 a.m., the exact time the bomb detonated in 1963, church bells across downtown Birmingham will toll.
