BJCTA to manage Birmingham’s microtransit service under new agreement

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham City Council has approved a resolution for the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority to manage the city’s microtransit program.

The one-year, intergovernmental agreement was approved for $2.5 million. The city currently works with Via for microtransit management. However, city leaders noted because the city is not a transit agency, it does not qualify for federal matching dollars. However, the BJCTA does quality for federal funding, which could stretch the city’s budget. The service will continue its current coverage plan, which includes 26.6 square miles of the city. Service hours will remain from Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In another resolution, the city authorized Mayor Randall Woodfin to execute a purchase agreement with Granicus LLC for short-term rental software solutions. The agreement, not exceeding $86,836.38, will last until June 30, 2028, unless terminated earlier. This software will aid in address identification, compliance monitoring, rental activity monitoring, tax collection, and mobile permitting and registration.
