Parker’s Law takes effect October 1, exempting nursing moms from jury duty

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Oct. 1, several new laws will go into effect in Alabama, including “Parker’s Law,” which exempts nursing mothers from jury duty for up to two years.

Kandace Brown, a mother of five, said this journey began back in January when she took to Facebook to describe what it was like having to report for jury duty in Jefferson County with a 3-month old in tow.

“Tons of people packed in,” she explained, “and I’m there with my tiny little 3-month-old and I thought when I got there, I told them over the phone I was breast feeding and I couldn’t leave her because she wouldn’t take a bottle, and they told me it wasn’t an excuse I’d still have to come.”…
