State Rep. Givan calls for action on false ethics complaints

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan expressed gratitude to the Alabama Ethics Commission for closing an investigation into allegations that she misused campaign funds during her mayoral run in Birmingham.

Givan emphasized the need for recourse for officials and government employees when complaints are deemed frivolous or fraudulent. “It’s not right and it’s not fair for a person to have their good name and character tarnished by an ethics complaint and not have any recourse if the accusation is proven to be false,” she said.

Givan plans to introduce legislation in the 2026 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature to make filing false or frivolous ethics complaints a criminal offense. “Expanding the law to include filing a false ethics complaint might just get people to think twice if they face the possibility of a hefty fine or even jail time,” she said…
