Birmingham sees over 5% drop in violent crime despite overall crime increase this year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) – The City of Birmingham is showing positive movement in its ongoing fight against violent crime, according to Year-to-Date (YTD) data released by the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) as of September 22, 2025.

Overall, offenses have increased by nearly 3 percent compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 7,869 incidents to 8,092. However, violent crime is down citywide by over 5 percent. This upward trend in overall crime is primarily driven by an increase in theft, up nearly 12 percent from a year ago.
