BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The criminal case against a DHR contractor for her involvement in the hot car death of a 3-year-old child is moving forward.
On Wednesday, a judge ruled that there was probable cause in the case against Kela Stanford, a driver who worked on behalf of Jefferson County DHR who is charged with leaving Ketorrius Starkes, Jr. in a hot car for hours just outside her home with no way to get out. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Starkes died as a result of “environmental hyperthermia.”
During the court hearing Wednesday, a detective with the Birmingham Police Department gave a timeline of what led up to Starkes’ death, starting with Stanford picked Starkes up from daycare around 9 a.m., then taking him to a supervised visit with his father at the Bessemer DHR office until 11:30 a.m…
