Lake Purdy levels drop drastically as Birmingham faces driest September since 2021

The newest drought monitor was released for Alabama on Thursday, with worsening drought conditions around the state.

Extreme Drought is in place for parts of Greene, Hale, and Marengo counties. According to Thursday’s drought report, historically with extreme drought, “…air quality is poor; large-scale hay shortages occur; wildfire count and fire danger continue to increase…”. For perspective, the Demopolis Lock and Dam in Marengo County has only recorded 1.73 inches of rain during the month of September, behind the normal 3.38 inches.
