Second Quarter Stampede Tramples Miles

Miles (0-6, 0-3) allowed 31 straight points after taking an early lead against Kentucky State, ultimately succumbing to the Thorobreds 38-17 Saturday afternoon at Sloan-Alumni Stadium. Quarterback Brinley Vandiver threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns but his three interceptions – two which came in a backbreaking first half that led directly to scores – helped KSU (4-2, 4-1) build a big lead before halftime.

Ashton Whitfield got his first interception of the season on Kentucky State’s opening drive and returned it 38 yards to the KSU 35 in the opening quarter. Miles got to the Thorobreds 5-yard line but ultimately settled for 22-yard field goal by Reid Grek to take an early lead. But after allowing KSU to take the lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Torrance Bardell to Jon McCall, Vandiver was picked off deep in Miles’ end on the ensuing possession. The Thorobreds would add a field goal after the turnover for a 10-3 advantage after the first period…
