Judge allows wrongful death lawsuit to proceed against Bessemer and police officers

A judge has ruled a wrongful death lawsuit can continue, after a motion from the City of Bessemer to dismiss the case.

The lawsuit stems from an October 7, 2024, crash where 70-year-old Angela Lockhart was killed in a head-on collision on I-59.

The collision happened when Christopher Lavon Moore, fleeing from police, drove southbound in the northbound lane and struck Angela Lockhart’s vehicle. The lawsuit claims Bessemer police officers negligently and/or wantonly engaged in a high-speed pursuit of Moore, breaching their duty of care and contributing to Lockhart’s death.
