Birmingham celebrates opening of first all-inclusive playground at Bessie Estell Park

Birmingham Park and Recreation, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, Birmingham City Councilor Valerie Abbott, Sen. Rodger Smitherman, and the Glen Iris Neighborhood Association, announced the grand opening of the city’s first all-inclusive playground at Bessie Estell Park. The playground, inspired by Veronica Ware’s vision for her daughter and other children with special needs, aimed to provide a space where children of all abilities could play together.

“This playground is a beautiful reflection of what can happen when compassion meets community,” said Shonaé Eddins-Bennett, director of Birmingham Park and Recreation. “Our goal has always been to create spaces where every child—regardless of ability—feels welcome, valued, and included.
