Pauline Ford, founder of the Central Alabama Caribbean American Organization, is mobilizing efforts to support hurricane relief in the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa makes landfall.
Ford, who has lived in Birmingham for 20 years, still has family in Jamaica and is deeply concerned about their safety. “I still have family, and we have been trying to communicate and stay in touch as much as possible,” she said.
The nonprofit, typically focused on scholarships and cultural events, is now redirecting resources to assist those affected by the storm. “In addition to awarding the scholarships we are going to designate a certain percentage for hurricane relief because it is not just Jamaica that’s being impacted. Haiti is also impacted, and Bahamas is also impacted,” Ford explained…
