‘Crushing:’ Alabama family braces for pause in SNAP benefits as Thanksgiving approaches

More than 700,000 Alabamians rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table. In Jefferson County that number is 86,318 according to the latest numbers from Alabama Department of Human Resources. Uneeko Hall is one of those people. She said the pause in SNAP assistance happened at the worst possible time with the holidays around the corner. Hall is the cook of the family.

“My daughter inboxed me and said, ‘Is Thanksgiving still happening?’ That crushed me.”

Hall explained she had about $24 left for October’s benefits, so she went to Sam’s this week to stock up as much as she could…
