Five points fire takes away homes and workplace of many, business owner mourns loss

A devastating fire in Birmingham has left a historic area in ruins, uprooting the lives of many residents and business owners. Savanah Hrbek, owner of Blush Birmingham, lost both her business and childhood home in the blaze that caused significant damage to three buildings on Friday morning. “The finality of it all is hitting today though. The fact that we’ll never get this back. This historic area, this beautiful what once was a vibrant part of five points it’s absolutely devastating,” Hrbek said.

Hrbek, who had operated her business there for nearly ten years, recounted the harrowing morning. “We got a call from one of the residents around 5:45, 6:00 in the morning saying they were being evacuated we all jumped up here and rushed down here as quick as possible. I got here around 7:00, 7:15 and watched it all burn down,” she said.

The building housing Blush Birmingham was a mixed-use structure with apartment units and retail spaces. Adjacent to it was a vacant building, where the fire originated, which was completely destroyed. A condominium building with approximately 20 units also suffered significant damage…
