Katie Britt voices concern over Bessemer data center, power demand

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt says she’s worried that a $14 billion data center project proposed for rural Alabama could mean higher electric bills for nearby residents.

“I understand the importance of data centers. We are in a race against China when it comes to AI, and we have to make sure we maintain the lead that we currently have because this is the race,” Britt said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday. “However, I think we have to be smart about how we do it.”

The Bessemer City Council voted 5-2 to rezone nearly 700 acres of rural land just southwest of Birmingham to make way for the development of an 18-building hyperscale data center campus. An attorney for the developer called it one of the “largest private investments in Alabama’s history.”…
