Birmingham, AL – Emergency officials across Alabama are urging residents to begin preparing today for potential winter hazards, including freezing rain and ice storms that can occasionally impact the state. While snowfall in Alabama is relatively rare, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns that ice accumulation—even from short-duration freezing rain—can cause significant damage to trees, vehicles, and powerlines.
According to NOAA, even a thin glaze of ice can snap weakened branches and create extremely dangerous travel conditions along major corridors such as I-65, I-20, I-59, and US-280.
