Residents at Bankhead Towers in Birmingham say problems persist

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Elevators at Bankhead Towers are back in service after flooding knocked them out during the weekend. Residents said, however, the repairs are just the latest in a long line of ongoing issues at the historic high-rise.

The 15-story building, constructed in the 1920s, experienced an outage after a sprinkler head was accidentally discharged, causing water damage that shorted the elevator’s electrical board.

“The water damage from that sprinkler system ended up shorting out the electrical board for the elevator … and they’ve been repaired,” said Battalion Chief Clay Hendon of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service…
