Mary Badham, actress of Scout Finch in 1962 film adaptation of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ discusses Virginia Samford Theatre and the arts in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” opens at Virginia Samford Theatre Thursday night. The show is being directed by David Strickland. Mary Badham, who played Scout Finch in the 1962 film adaptation of the book, is attending the opening performance.

Badham said her audition for the film was held in the Virginia Samford Theatre.

“[My mother] came to work at the theatre one day, and James Hatcher, who ran the theatre, said he had these movie people coming in to find the children for ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’” Badham said. “And he said, you know, ‘Mary’s about the right age, and everything. Why don’t you bring her in?’”…
