First Alert Weather: Hard freeze, dangerous wind chills move in Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A blast of frigid arctic air will impact the state beginning Sunday morning. Temperatures on Sunday will fall throughout the day, with a gusty north wind at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. While some sunshine will return Sunday, temperatures will fall throughout the day, with many areas remaining at or just above freezing for most of the day. The gusty wind will also bring wind chills in the teens and 20s during the day Sunday.

The wind chills will plummet into the single digits and teens Sunday night as low temperatures drop into the teens. Plan for lows ranging from 12º north to 18º south by Monday morning. This is a setup for a hard freeze and make sure all exposed pipes/faucets are properly insulated and protected. Make sure pets have a warm shelter and check on the elderly, friends, and neighbors to make sure everyone has the First Alert. Temperatures will rise above freezing Monday, but we will see another hard freeze Monday night, with lows in the teens north to low 20s south.

THE NEXT 24 HOURS: Temperatures remain on track tonight, with lows tumbling into the upper 30s and low 40s. The sky will become partly sunny on Saturday, with afternoon highs in the middle 60s. There will be a chance for scattered showers Saturday night between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday. Rain will remain very scattered, but this will exit quickly before the cold air pours into the state Sunday morning…
