Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth’s survival was a miracle.

The Birmingham pastor was an early supporter of the Montgomery Bus Boycott — and wanted to push similar integration efforts in central Alabama. On Christmas Eve 1956, Shuttlesworth announced plans to desegregate the Birmingham Transit Company.
