Birmingham City Council approves $1.8 million in violence prevention contracts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham City Council has approved four violence prevention contracts totaling $1.8 million, extending funding for the programs through Sept. 30, 2026.

City leaders say the initiatives are designed to reduce violent crime by focusing on prevention rather than enforcement, targeting people considered most at risk of being involved in violence. The programs include violence interruption, hospital-based intervention, street outreach, workforce training and victim support.
