BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A women’s recovery center in Birmingham is expanding. The Lovelady Center has bought a 56-unit apartment complex three blocks from its 2nd Avenue South location.
“We never thought we’d be landlords, right? We never thought we’d be in this business,” said Frank Long, the development director at the Lovelady Center. “Right now, we have 540 adult females here and about 116 of their children. And so we have graduations twice a month, and at every graduation, our executive director will tell me ‘hey Frank, we got 12 graduate and guess how many are leaving?’ and I’ll be like ‘maybe none’, because affordable housing is just such an issue. So, currently we have 130 graduates in the building. This is going to alleviate that space and allow us to be able to serve more ladies.”
However, this purchase has left some current residents of the apartment complex upset…
