Lane shift for I-59 widening in Trussville to start Jan. 6

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (TRIBUNE) — A lane shift related to the widening of Interstate 59 in Trussville is expected to affect daily commutes beginning early next week.

Starting the evening of Jan. 6, 2026, weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation will shift traffic to the outside lanes to begin the next phase of northbound construction.

The traffic changes will affect the I-59 and I-459 interchange in several ways:

  • I-59 northbound at I-459 will taper to one lane until traffic merges into the temporary outside lane just beyond the interchange.
  • Drivers traveling from U.S. 11 onto I-459 northbound will not be able to merge left to access I-59 southbound toward Birmingham.
  • Traffic exiting I-459 northbound onto I-59 northbound will be reduced to one lane.

ALDOT is urging U.S. 11 drivers headed toward Birmingham to seek alternate routes. Motorists traveling northbound on I-59 and I-459 should expect delays at the interchange. A map detailing the traffic pattern changes has been provided by ALDOT.

The temporary lane configuration could remain in place for up to three months. In addition, ALDOT plans to close both northbound ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141) for approximately 40 days in spring 2026…
