Birmingham city councilors push for more to be done about celebratory gunfire

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – City councilors called for answers and action at their meeting Tuesday, Jan. 6, after the celebratory gunfire they heard in Birmingham New Year’s Eve.

“I understand that the gunshots are down. But every year, it doesn’t feel like it,” said District 6 Councilor Crystal Smitherman.

On Friday, Jan. 2, the Birmingham Police Department reported a 37% reduction in celebratory gunshot incidents on the last day of 2025. The report also says fewer than 5,000 rounds fired were detected…
